Update from Highways England: ------------------------- Thank you for your email to our customer contact centre on 3 January 2020 about the lack of countdown markers on the M42.
The countdown markers on the M42 southbound were removed during the construction of the smart motorways project that installed the variable speed limits and hard shoulder running through that section of the M42. The countdown sign positions clashed with the locations of the emergency refuge areas that are required for hard shoulder running. Junction exit signing is provided in accordance with regulations in the form of the gantry mounted advance direction signing and verge mounted signs indicating the position where the hard shoulder ends and the exit lane begins.
