Dangerous using A12 cycle path due to overgrown vegetation (Capel St Mary, Suffolk)
Reported via mobile in the Pavement/footpath issue (NH) category anonymously at 18:27, Fri 1 January 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2456569.
I use the A12 cycle path between Colchester and Ipswich regularly, but lately it is getting increasingly dangerous due to constantly getting whipped in the face and across my arms and hands from overgrown branches and twigs. Luckily I wear good eye protection because yesterday I’m pretty sure I would have been blinded if I didn’t!!!
Between the Esso garage and the Capel St Mary turn off there is also a tree growing outward into the path which forced me off the path and on to the A12 road itself!!!!!!
The state of that section of the cycle path is shockingly bad and completely unacceptable. Somebody is likely to get hurt or even killed. I just hope it isn’t me!

A week on and it’s more overgrown. Again I had to go onto the A12 to get past the overgrown tree and nearly fell off the bike as a car roared past sounding its horn as I was trying to get back on the path. This week though, it was pointless being on the path after the Esso garage because there’s no longer enough room to cycle comfortably on it, so there is effectively no more cycle path at that part, meaning any cyclists will now be taking their life into their hands to travel that section.
Time to talk to my local MP!!
Highways Agency are NOT fulfilling their obligations to maintain so will go over their head to get the job done!

Another week gone by and clear proof the Highways agency doesn’t give a sh*t about cyclists! My MP, Will Quince will be contacting you soon and my likely my family, or someone else’s family as well - to claim compensation for a death. What an absolute joke you are! I have informed all my family what to do and who to blame in the event I don’t make it home one day!

Another two weeks and still being forced into oncoming live traffic lane of a busy trunk road, taking my life into my hands!
You people are a fucking joke!!!!!
If I get killed my family are going to take you to the fucking cleaners! Our solicitor has already been advised and been provided with photos and video. You won’t have a fucking leg to stand on!

I tried to use this path today to cycle to work in Ipswich. It's an absolute mess and I turned back towards home after 15 minutes of trying to negotiate through the overgrowth.
Shame, as it would have saved me 10 miles. Whilst I'm not as angry as the other dude, I am equally annoyed.

The overgrowth is still there today; the path is practically unusable, and anybody using it is in danger of hurting themselves.

Thank you for your patience whilst our inspector reviewed your report. We carry out regular inspections of our roads and cut back trees and vegetation where we find that it’s limiting visibility of road signs, traffic signals, at junctions or the view ahead. This has been logged as 28 day priority and aim to complete the vegetation clearance by the end of August.
Kind regards Highways England
