Not enough clear singage regarding turning etc. National speed limit not appropriate
Reported via desktop in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 12:11, Fri 22 January 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2494993.
Road is national speed limit and the are always accidents when turning into or out of junctions along the road. Today again a car has been hit from behind trying to turn right into Eltisley Manor as the speed limit is not appropriate. It is a miracle that nobody has been seriously injured or even killed. Please make the road a 40mph limit and put in extra warning signage to prevent further accidents

Thank you for your enquiry about the possibility to reduce the speed limit and install junction warning signs at the A428 near Eltisley Manor.
Whilst we can understand why you might associate lower speed with increased safety, this is not guaranteed to be safer as the speed limit must be appropriate to the road type and levels of traffic. The A428 is subject to the national speed limit and we would only change the speed limit of a specific section after proper consideration and evidence of how it would affect safety at the location. The approach of a junction would not justify a change in speed limit. Drivers must adjust their speed according to the live situation and this would apply to any road, regardless of the maximum legal speed limit of the road.
At present, we have no evidence that the existing speed limit is creating poor safety at the A428 near Eltisley Manor, and without this we would not change the limit as it may be counter-effective for safety. An example of this may be the creation of an unnecessary bottleneck, requiring more drivers along the A428 to abruptly change speed, increasing the likelihood of collisions.
In relation to the possibility for extra junction warning signing, we have reviewed the junction previously and this would have been one of the options considered if a need for improvement was identified. However, there were no improvement needs identified. We discourage extra signs on our road network where they are not deemed necessary, as sign clutter can negatively impact on safety, encourage driver complacency and lead to less focus and alertness on the road situation. Safety remains our priority and we continue to monitor this section of the A248 along with our other routes.
Kind Regards Highways England
