Confusing road markings

Reported via mobile in the Road markings category anonymously at 09:39, Friday 12 February 2021

Sent to Highways England less than a minute later

Inner lane has a straight arrow to go straight ahead yet it's also marked A5 which is left. Yet the middle lane has a left turning arrow and a straight ahead arrow. I've been in 2 near misses in the last week. Inner lane needs a left only arrow before someone gets hurt. VERY DANGEROUS

  • Nothing has been done. You have a arrow for A5 north pointing straight on yet the A5 north is left. People are just seeing the arrow and going straight then they go into other people's lanes. Confusing and still very dangerous

  • I agree with the previous people posting. It needs sorting there is going to be a terrible accident caused by this. When you drive it daily and witness the amount of near misses it even be involved. I have lost count. This is causing so much local frustration that it is now even been post on the local social media pages. Will only become a safety concern once a life has been taken because it will not be long before it happens.

  • The inside lane is marked staight ahead but as you approach lights, changes to left only. The middle lane is marked staight ahead and also turn left. The problem arises when the left lane decides to go straight on, at the same time as the middle lane decides to go left. Accident waiting to happen.

  • I travel off of the M69 exit from Coventry, to this roundabout everyday for work. 9 times out of 10, a car from the farthest left hand lane ALWAYS drives straight to head towards the Burbage exit, into traffic coming from the middle 'correct' lane. Paying no attention tonight to road markings etc.. but saying that, on approach to the left hand turning to the A5 There are straight on arrows, giving the impression you can go 'straight on. This needs changing to show left turn arrows on approach , not straight on arrows. The road markings and signs are not very clear. There is a new road layout sign, bit no indication what the new road layout is, except the big green sign. But even that is easily mistaken. A left turn only sign, in the left lane would be more suited, and a change is white arrow markings on the road. Better still, a solid white line to show 'to stay within the lane' on the left hand lane. It's only a matter of time before there are accidents, especially the speed some cars go travelling across the lane, confidently without a care in the world, thinking they are in the right lane to go straight on when their not. It's such a shame that there has to be more accidents before anything is done, same with speed cameras, there has to be a certain number of accidents/ deaths before anything is changed... shame really. Prevention is better than cure, as they say.

  • Terrible junction. 4 cars cut from far left to middle lane today realising they were in the wrong lane by mistake. Numerous accidents narrowly avoided. If you spent 10 minutes observing the junction during 5/6pm rush hour you’d see the issue…

  • Also had this today 3 cars trying to cut across as realised they were in wrong lane too late, markings are poor. Has been years of being able to go straight on from left lane but people aren’t realising this has changed, needs better signage/markings.

  • Whoever went to see this and said that there is no problem clearly needs to find a new job. I drive here every day and I see near accidents every single evening. It’s not clear and dangerous.

  • I drive this way home from work daily, and almost daily there is confusion and near misses with sudden/last minute lane changes. I would urge you to send out a different inspector to offer a second opinion before a serious accident forces the issue.

  • I think there should be a seperate merge lane built going up the a5 so cars/lorrys coming off the m69 don't have to wait at the lights. Not only that the traffic lighting system on that roundabout is an absolute discrace, not only is there timings all useless creating more traffic than ever, get rid of them or at least turn them off during none busy periods

Posted anonymously at 06:47, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • Accident waiting to happen. It seems to make traffic worse not better.

Posted anonymously at 06:48, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • Traffic would run smoothly if the arrows further near the m69 were changed to match the ones near the traffic lights. God forbid if its a family car that is involved by someone stupidly decides to go straight on instead of turning left. Do you really want a death on your hands before it's changed to correct markings!

  • The left lane is so unclear. The arrows point straight on which on most means you can go straight on in the left lane , however on this one people are meant to know it means left only. Please change it to a left arrow it would make it so much clearer and hopefully avoid a unnecessary nasty accident. People travel at some speed and I've witnessed many who genuinely don't seem to realise they are in the wrong lane and many who panic and have to change lane last minute. Actually scared to drive that way at busy times

  • Very unclear. I use this junction every day travelling home from work and I get 2-3 near misses a week by cars cutting from my left when I’m using the middle lane to go to Hinckley (as instructed). The worst case though is if someone in the left lane decides to go straight on to Hinckley while someone in the middle goes left to the A5, which while not a daily event in my experience is fairly common. I urge to to re-evaluate your decision that this is not safe. Come and observe the junction for a few hours - or better still - a few days and count the number of near miss lane crossings that happen.

  • I also drive this road every day and I am emergency/advanced driver trainer. The layout is poor. The arrows change from straight to left as you're in a position to turn, not on the approach to the junction. The green sign is situated too far down for people to realise early enough. I've narrowly avoided so many incidents because you now EXPECT someone to be in the wrong lane. I go straight over so it's easier to avoid but if i had been turning left from the middle lane, there would have been an accident on more than one occasion. YEARS of people being able to go straight ahead and it is suddenly changed and done poorly. Whoever said this is acceptable is certainly wrong and this needs to be reviewed at a time when there is heavy traffic on the road.

  • Since the road markings were changed i have avoided several accidents there with people now using the wrong lanes, people also getting angry with others and have witnessed road rage after people swapping lanes at the last minute and nearly hitting others. No big sings to say the road layout and lane priorities have changed, very dangerous.

  • You need new clear signs AND very clear road markings. Too many near misses ! Come on, do something

Posted anonymously at 07:40, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • M69/A5 junction, signs are misleading. Needs a clear indication of the lanes. There will be a big accident at the island.

Posted anonymously at 08:21, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • Ridiculously dangerous coming. The road signs are not clear, arrow should point left, so people don't carry on straight.

Posted anonymously at 08:22, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • I agree the road signs are unclear. The first time I ever drove to Hinckley I followed the road signs marked on the road, middle lane to Hinckley. Someone in the left lane cut me up trying to go straight on, beeping at me causing a very near collision, yet they were in the wrong. I do this route daily now and it’s very rare that there isn’t someone in the left lane going straight causing a near miss. I’m always cautious with this. I agree it is very dangerous and there will be an accident eventually, as said watch it for 10 minutes and you’ll see multiple cars go straight on from left. Needs to be sorted.

  • There is no need for 2 lanes to go down the A5 towards Nuneaton. When the A5 back up, it then results in both lanes 1&2 becoming blocked and stopping traffic getting into Burbage/Hinckley. There were no issues with the old layout.

Posted anonymously at 08:32, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • Agree with previous comments. LH lane (A5/Nuneaton) needs to be shown as left turn only. Middle lane (A5/Nuneaton and Hinckley) should have a split arrow indicating turn left OR straight on. Plus more road markings required on all lanes on the whole length of the slip road. Perhaps more signage after such a major reconfiguration of the junction?

Posted anonymously at 10:03, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • Ditto on the left hand lane needing an arrow pointing left, not straight ahead. Also arrows are too far down the slip road.

Posted anonymously at 17:29, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • The signage at this, exit slip road of the M69 Hinckley turn off is incorrect and drivers not familiar with area are being led by the signage to the A5 North to continue straight ahead when in fact it's a Left turn.

I'm guessing that nothing is done in these cases until there have been three accidents, which is the policy I was informed about on a Driver Awreness course in 2015.

This signage needs changing now, not tomorrow, and certainly not after one accident nevermind three.

Posted anonymously at 20:34, Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • Yes I use this junction Monday to Friday and pretty much every day someone tries to go straight on to Hinckley in the left hand lane, it needs sorting out.

  • Wait for an accident which will happen.. maybe they'll listen then. I use this route often and 9/10 times I've been beeped at for following the road markings when other don't! It's frustrating they make you look stupid too!!! It's always the case isn't it, takes something to happen before they're willing to do something about it.

  • I agree with all of the above points. After observing many near misses, this has to be sorted!!!!

  • I too use this daily at around 1830 and daily there is someone in the wrong lane. The problem as per previous posts is where the driver in the left hand line tries to go straight on, as directed by the arrow on the road, and the driver in the middle lane turns left. I have witnessed numerous “near misses” in the scenario. I know the road so I am aware of the driver suddenly going straight on when I expect him to turn left but for someone who does not know the area ……….

  • Very poor warning signage and needs to improve. I use it daily and pretty much every time someone is in the wrong lane
