Litter on both sides m42 from junction 1 to 3

Reported via mobile in the Litter category anonymously at 15:42, Thursday 18 February 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later

There's very heavy littering on both sides off the m42 between 1 and 3 and the central reservation. I have never seen it this bad. I drive on this road daily and cannot recall when it was last cleaned. I've written to my MP about this matter.

  • Thank you for your patience whilst we looked into your report.

Litter picking is a short term, retrospective solution, which would be significantly reduced if litter was not dropped. We are committed to working to address the root cause, which requires changing the behaviour of those who currently feel that it is acceptable to drop litter. We work with anti-litter organisations (such as Keep Britain Tidy), the police, and local authorities to try to tackle these issues at source.

In the short term, our litter picking is carefully planned, along with all of our maintenance, to try to minimise the impact it has on road users, and ensure that it is cost effective to the public. Picks often require traffic management measures, which are both costly and disruptive. To help reduce the need for these measures, we usually combine our litter picks with other maintenance work.

We will be continuing to look for opportunities to schedule picks along the M42, as our schedule of maintenance and safety critical works allow. I am sorry that I’m not able to give you a date for this work at this time. We will be continuing to monitor this situation as part of our routine inspections.

  • The standard corporate response from highways england whenever you complain about why they aren't complying with their legal responsibilities towards litter as set out under the 1990 Environment Act. Maybe Highways England could investigate how most other western countries are able to keep their motorway network clean and litter free.
