Confusing traffic light

As new to the UK roads, but with more than 20 years of driving experience, i was confused when i was in front of the traffic light 2 (see photo) red, while i had crossed traffic light 1 (see photo) on green and wanted to turn left to A1081 and go to Barnet hospital. I was not sure if the traffic light 2 was for me or for cars coming from other lanes. I didn't know if i had to stop, taking the risk of being hit at the rear of my car (with my 3 year old chid in the car) by another car, probably speeding up to cross traffic light 1. Or to cross the traffic light in red. The traffic light is just after the turn and to me was confusing. I still don't know what is correct and legitimate. if it is to serve those who want to turn left to A1081 (St Albans Road) then it would make sense to follow the same pattern and synchronise (red or green) as with the traffic light 1. So as not to confuse anybody and not to need to press the break sharply with all the implications that may have (e.g. hit by another car in the rear, baby sleeping and exposed to sharp break, etc.).
Please let me know what is legitimate in that case (cross the traffic light or wait till in turns green) as we have to use that road very often.
Best wishes, Chris
