Litter and glass in subway

Reported via desktop in the Litter category anonymously at 18:29, Tuesday 6 April 2021

Sent to Highways England less than a minute later

There is litter and glass in subway on West Road entrance. After the bushes have been cut back there is lots of rubbish in the bushes including lawn mower and bicycle. The whole area around the subway is in poor maintenance and in places danger particularly with glass on pavements and on stairs. This has been reported six times to the council who have just advised me that it is not their responsibility but is a Highways issue.

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England regarding litter and glass in this area.

The responsibility for this issue, on this road, is that of Newcastle City Council. Under the Environmental Protection Act litter and fly-tipping is the responsibility of the local authority on all but "special roads", for which the local authorities receive monies from DoT to carry out their duties. This location is an All Purpose Trunk Road and is therefore the responsibility of the council.

To our knowledge, Pamela Holmes, Service Manager for Highways Maintenance and Operations, is the person at Newcastle City Council who has previously arranged litter picks on the A1.

I do hope that Newcastle City Council assist you in this issue.

Contact details for local authorities can be found by using the search facility at: www.gov.uk/find-your-local-council.

    Thank you,

    Highways England
