Ridiculously long time to change as set of traffic lights

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks category anonymously at 19:08, Monday

Sent to Highways England less than a minute later

There has been disruption to the main arterial A27 since February and still ongoing, simply to make a simple change to some pedestrian traffic lights. This work has significantly overrun from the planned finish date; it still isn't finished. It is questionable (because it hasn't been properly explained to the public) why it should take more that a few days to make such a simple change, and to be honest I can't see any difference between the old and new lights, although the new ones are still covered. Please expedite the completion of these works. I will be interested to see what excuse you come up with this time, and how convincing and honest it will be, however I will keep an open mind about it. Oh, I see that we can only report these anonymously, so you won't have to bother explaining yourselves. Not very transparent...

  • Thank you for your feedback and please accept our apologies for the inconvenience experienced whilst we've been replacing and updating the Toucan Crossing by Manor Road, Lancing and we understand your frustration the works have overrun past the anticipated completion date of 16 April.

In addition to replacing the existing lights there was a requirement to install a new electrical layout with updated equipment, relocation of the communication and electrical feeder boxes to next to the bus stop away from the central reservation to allow more room for mobility scooters to use the crossing. A second electrical feeder pillar has also been installed to allow for easier maintenance in the future by reducing the need for UKPN visits and carriageway closures whilst works are carried out.

Whilst all works are programmed in advance, we do have to rely on third parties such as UKPN and unfortunately we encountered unexpected problems on site while tying into existing civils equipment, resulting in extra works being required. Works were stood down for a period whilst we sought roadspace and local authority approvals, taking into account other works already approved on the A27 and local area. We also lost shifts due to inclement weather.

Whilst, the works necessitating road closures completed on 29 April, we're currently finalising the commissioning of the new lights by our specialist technology partners at which time the temporary lights can be removed. The anticipated date for this is 13 May and the works will be carried out off network without the requirement for further road closures.

Again, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
