Road sign and road markings at the Stainburn roundabout should be clearer

Reported via desktop in the Road markings category anonymously at 10:29, Wednesday 16 June 2021

Sent to Highways England less than a minute later

According to guidance in the Highway Code, motorists heading towards Cockermouth on the A66 should approach in the right hand lane as they are performing a right turn. However the majority of traffic approaches in the left lane. I believe this is causing confusion and could result in an accident. A simple road sign indicating the appropriate lane to be in would clear this up. Such signs have been added to the roundabout at the eastern end of the by-pass.

Updates

  • You are correct that the Highway Code states that if your exit is past '12oclock' then you should use the right hand lane on approach to a roundabout unless otherwise instructed. However as this roundabout on has a two lane entry and a 2 lane exit, those that regularly travel this stretch of the A66 are aware of this and remain in lane one to continue along the A66. We have recently reviewed lane usage at a number of roundabouts, which has led to the provision of additional signs and road markings. We can confirm that we will include Stainburn roundabout in future reviews. Thank you for taking the time to contact us and share your observations.
