Temp 40mph speed limit
Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 18:20, Thu 17 June 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2799501.
Why has the speed limit been reduced to 40mph from junction 26 on this perfectly fine piece of dual carriageway? It is excessive, scary and somewhat dangerous in my experience. There is also a severe lack of enforcement. There are no apparent road works, so why has it been reduced? Currently the vast majority of traffic is totally ignoring the change of speed. It's scary when you do obey the speed limit and have all manner of other road users charging up behind you (worryingly a this includes 'professional' lorry drivers thundering up behind you. Clearly most drivers are ignoring the change of speed and making it incredibly dangerous for those that do. Even more scary if you're a learner. Please do something about this asap. Either enforce the speed limit, or change it to something sensible please.

Please review this situation. It is dangerous as most drivers aren’t adhering to the 40mph limit. It does seem unnecessary for a long stretch of dial carriageway.

I agree, either stop the 40mph limit because it's pointless or actually enforce it with average speed cameras. If I go the speed limit everyone is shooting past me.

I agree, the traffic needs to slow as it gets close to the new junction with Huntingdon ring road but to start at the Godmanchester junction was dangerous enough and now to hear it’s back as far as St Ives this is just a very serious accident waiting to happen.

Way too many ignoring the speed limits...that was before the 40 mph.... clearly if this road is to have reduced speed ultimately lower than the national limit it will need to be enforced..... to be honest...if you are putting a 40 mph limit during works..... take the road down to one lane....

I totally agree with the above posters. Traffic does need to slow down for the new lights near the railway station but to have 40mph as far back as st Ives when no work is being done does seem to be a slight oversight. I suggest it's either enforced or reduced back to admit 500 metres from the new junction.

The whole 40 limit is ridiculous, no works are being done, and when they are the road is shut anyway, 40mph should be introduced at 500 yards from the new Junction to the ring road, and whilst we are talking about this new Junction, can someone please sort out the sequence on the traffic lights of the Junction on the ring road/bus station entrance, lights are red for absolutely no reason, causing even more congestion than this new Junction has in the first place, the whole thing is a shambles!

40 limit......
Yes I stick to it because it is a legal speed limit. My phone/ car sat nav and portable sat nav all say that 40 is the limit...
However, I do feel that I am a danger to other road users because they travel past me at 60 plus mph.
I would suggest two things :-
Linked and enforceable speed cameras.
Change the signs from the temporary roadworks signs to proper signs, and a lot more of them.

Highways claim that the speed restrictions are in place because they need to do work on the barriers and it's a safety issue. However, the speed restrictions have been in place for almost a year with no works carried out and no differences to the barriers since the A1307 was altered. No one is sticking to the slower speed and it's causing more issues than being back at 70mph. Fair enough to reduce speed as you pass the onslip from Godmanchester to Huntingdon centre, but dont have the reduced speed from as far back as St Ives unless you're actually planning to do some works.

Agree, there is no logical reason why a temporary 40mph speed limit should exist on a dual carriage way without roadworks. It is confusing and an accident waiting to happen. Needs to be moved to 1 mile before the Huntingdon turn off.

This actually feels really scary I am someone who strictly sticks to the speed limits and worry about being rear ended as most other vehicles were doing 60±

This was dangerous even before the 40mph limit was extended. Has anyone from Highways England driven at 40mph for the entire stretch?

Thank you for contacting Highways England regarding the temporary 40mph speed limit on the A1307.
The reason for the speed limit there is the centre reservation barrier is in need of replacement and the limit is there for safety of the public. We have this work scheduled to take place in March 2022.
We have spoken to our contractors who will be putting signs on the network to indicate that the speed limit is there for safety reasons.
I hope this helps to answer your report.
Kind Regards Highways England
