The cycle path along the A34 needs resurfacing, and widening. It it dangerously degraded, and too narrow for two people to pass one another, on bikes or on foot, along most of its length. The cycle path has been in this state for years (at least 8), while the main road next to it has been resurfaced multiple times. This failure to maintain the cycle path is at odds with Highways England's cycling strategy.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England.

I've asked our Inspector to visit the site and his assessment is that currently the footpath does not require immediate work to make it safe.

We will continue to review this and will arrange any required work if the situation changes.

However in the longer term Highways England have just started researching improvements on the A34 North and South of Oxford, the website is here https://highwaysengland.co.uk/ our-work/ a34-improvements-north-and-south-of-oxford/

  • The response from Highways England is poor. It provides no indication of what criteria were used in deciding that the the path is safe. For example, how it can be safe for 2 cyclists to pass on a two-way path this narrow, or how the drainage from the A34 creating perma-puddles flagged elsewhere on fixmystreet represent safe design. Nor is there any explanation for why the cycle lane is untouched when the main carriageway has been resurfaced multiple times in recent years.
