Dangerous traffic management

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks category anonymously at 10:37, Tuesday 6 July 2021

Sent to Highways England less than a minute later

Location: Roadworks A556 eastbound onto M56.

CAUSE: - The roadworks at this location require the dual carriageway traffic to be funnelled into a single lane. Lane 1 traffic is required to move into Lane 2. - The cones restricting the flow in Lane 1 start partway in the sweeping radius of the bend.

ISSUE 1: - Vision of the cones - closing off Lane 1 - is dangerously restricted until the last moment. ISSUE 2: - Contrary to most other lane restrictions (where Lane 1 is kept live and other traffic if funnelled into it) - the lane restriction is placed in Lane 1. - Meaning that - despite the blanket speed restriction - slower traffic is forced into the faster flowing Lane 2.

CONSEQUENCE: - Yesterday I witnessed a vehicle in Lane 1 nearly crash because the driver hadn't seen the signs, or the cones until it was too late. - Due to the radius of the bend, his mirrors were not able to see traffic in Lane 2.

WHAT SHOULD CHANGE: - The carriageway restriction should be placed on a straight length of carriageway, where it is clearly visible to all traffic NOT mid-bend. - Traffic should be restricted in Lane 2 NOT Lane 1.
