Temporary 50mph signs in place on small section of A1M, just before Scotch Corner junction
Reported via mobile in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 18:37, Tue 13 July 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2862523.
There is a small section that has 50mph signs in place but no reason as to why. There are no road works here, no obstructions or defects. One sign mentions flooding, however when travelling through during and after heavy rain, the road is fine. Potentially the signs have been left out after a historic flooding incident. As a result, few vehicles are obeying the temporary speed limit, which poses a hazard to those that are, especially as it is at a location where the left hand lane splits off, meaning other drivers both undertake and overtake cars obeying the temporary limit in the second lane (slow lane of the A1M). Flagging as suggested this should be removed in the interests of road safety, or for better signage as to why a temporary limit is in place.

Thank you for your patience whilst our inspector reviewed your report.
These signs have been put in place due to recent network events where we have had a surface water issue under high rainfall conditions at that one point on the northbound carriageway just south of Scotch Corner.
We have signage before the restriction and within the restriction as per the standards for this type of restriction. If you have concerns regarding other vehicles speeding through the restriction then please get in touch with the local Police force.
We will continue to review this and are arranging work to be carried out to address the surface water problem.

I wish to flag this again as a concern, as these signs and the temporary speed limit have now been in place for several months with no sign of any repair or rectification work. I would query if the work is still required as even in heavy rain and stormy weather this area does not appear to flood, or if the signs are in the correct place as the section signed is at the top of the hill which rarely appears to flood. Potentially, the area of concern could be further south at the bottom of the hill?

I would also like to flag this as there is now a police car and camera parked at the road side but no sign of flooding

The signs are still there.
Most drivers seem to ignore them when the weather is fine but some maybe less local drivers slow dramatically, suddenly and whilst everyone needs to be aware of how people around them drive, it seems an unnecessary distraction on an already busy road.

This signage is still there with no clear purpose and little to no compliance. Sometimes a police vehicle is there to monitor (will this be clocking above 50 or above 70, who knows). This appears mostly a way in which to generate income, as it's common that no one drops to the required 50 as it would endanger other drivers.
This should be reviewed and removed, as it serves no clear purpose apart from a money making scheme.

Something needs to be done. Having seen police cars periodically along this section, it is wise (and the law!) to stick to 50mph. It feels really dangerous doing so however due to the amount of people clearly driving at 70mph or over.
I drove through this section in heavy rain last night, there was no standing water. Are these signs still required?
