Changed road markings Spittals roundabout
Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 11:54, Sat 24 July 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2887529.
Left hand lane unnecessarily changed to A14E only, the amount of traffic turning left doesn’t warrant this. Despite new road markings and signage drivers are confused and many continue to go straight ahead in left hand lane. This causes issues of drivers cutting up those correctly following the new layout in the middle lane. Traffic light timing has also changed which is causing huge backup and exacerbating the issue. Why not keep left hand lane A14E/A141 straight ahead as before?

The left lane for turning left had a lorry in. We were in middle lane to go straight on and the lorry carried straight on and beeped at us as it ended up almost in our boot! Scary stuff

Too many near accidents as the sign advising of the lanes to get into is too close to the roundabout.

Two sets of road markings that conflict along with conflicting signage.

Lanes have changed routing with lack of sufficient road markings and signage. Left lane now a left filter but traffic continues to go straight on causing near collisions with middle lane traffic now diverted into left lane as they pass traffic lights. Urgently needs updating to either better sign the changes (including clear marking on road) or to revert to previous routing of left and middle lane straight on....

Thank you for contacting Highways England regarding Spittals roundabout.
The changes we’re making at the junction are a result of a design to make sure the correct destination signs are in place for the A1307 and A141. In order to manage the traffic, rather than closing the junction completely, we’ve done the work in phases around the roundabout. The road marking layout on the eastbound approach to Spittals is the last phase which is due to be finished early this week. Also, once all our changes are complete, a road safety audit will be done to highlight if there are any safety concerns which need addressing.
Lane 1 is now a dedicated left hand filter lane, solely intended for drivers wishing to exit Spittals roundabout and head northbound along the A1307 towards the A1M. Lanes 2 and 3 are for drivers continuing to travel on the A141 eastbound, or exiting Spittals roundabout to head southbound along the A1307.
As with any changes to the road layout on our SRN, we have installed temporary signs on the approach to Spittals roundabout, advising that the road layout has changed. As a temporary solution, we’ve also masked off the incorrect information on the approaching signs while replacement signs are being obtained. This ensures that the information on the signs matches the road markings on the approach to the roundabout, which should make it clear for approaching drivers which lane to take for their journey.
We apologise if these temporary measures have caused some confusion and not been very clear. We’re finishing the work by installing lane markings on the roundabout early this week and the straight ahead arrow in the inside lane will be hydro-blasted.
Thank you again for contacting us
Kind Regards Highways England
