  • Signage on the approach from Brampton Hut to Spittals about the new road layout is appalling.

  • Coming from Brampton to Spittals Roundabout:

The lane markings on approach to the roundabout are correct and there is clear yellow signage stating the left lane is left only….. sadly people are clearly not reading any signs on the approach probably due to the fact they have used the route many times. This is resulting in people in the left lane going ahead which then leaves those in the second lane with nowhere to go as they should (quite rightly) spiral to the left and the right hand lane spiral to the middle. Having used this roundabout all weekend with learner drivers I have witnessed many “ near miss accidents”…. Time to put the police on the roundabout to monitor this dangerous situation.

  • A141 Spittals RA, Huntingdon. Recent changes to Lane markings and usage, together with the phasing of traffic lights timing causing chaos the likes of which were not seen when this road was classified as the A14. Dangerous and confusing to locals and those passing through the area. URGENT rectification required.

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England regarding Spittals roundabout.

The changes we’re making at the junction are a result of a design to make sure the correct destination signs are in place for the A1307 and A141. In order to manage the traffic, rather than closing the junction completely, we’ve done the work in phases around the roundabout. The road marking layout on the eastbound approach to Spittals is the last phase which is due to be finished early this week. Also, once all our changes are complete, a road safety audit will be done to highlight if there are any safety concerns which need addressing.

Lane 1 is now a dedicated left hand filter lane, solely intended for drivers wishing to exit Spittals roundabout and head northbound along the A1307 towards the A1M. Lanes 2 and 3 are for drivers continuing to travel on the A141 eastbound, or exiting Spittals roundabout to head southbound along the A1307.

As with any changes to the road layout on our SRN, we have installed temporary signs on the approach to Spittals roundabout, advising that the road layout has changed. As a temporary solution, we’ve also masked off the incorrect information on the approaching signs while replacement signs are being obtained. This ensures that the information on the signs matches the road markings on the approach to the roundabout, which should make it clear for approaching drivers which lane to take for their journey.

We apologise if these temporary measures have caused some confusion and not been very clear. We’re finishing the work by installing lane markings on the roundabout early this week and the straight ahead arrow in the inside lane will be hydro-blasted.

We have also recently discovered an issue on the controller that runs the traffic signals and resolved this yesterday. We hope this has improved the traffic light issue at the roundabout.

Thank you again for contacting us

    Kind Regards Highways England
