High risk of collision m1 m62 roundabout
Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 10:03, Fri 27 August 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2962022.
This roundabout is dangerous. Vehicles exiting the m62 to go north on the m1 are told to be in the right and left lane. Once on the roundabout this means some of them are in the right hand lane trying to turn onto the m1 slip road. But the queued traffic on the roundabout in the left lane are turning right so there is a clash. Those coming from the m1 turning eastbound onto the m62 are encouraged in the left and right lane too. So they are turning right from the left hand lane. They get cars from the m62 trying to cut in front of them on the roundabout. The m62 traffic heading north on the m1 need to be restricted to one left hand lane. I have witnessed crashes consistently over the years yet it never seems to be addressed.

Thank you for contacting Highways England on 27 August regarding your observations on traffic travelling from the M62 to the M1 North. .
If I have understood your comments correctly the situation you have described would seems to be in relation to driver behavior. I do understand your concerns regarding this but it is a difficult issue to resolve. If this is regards to the layout of the roundabout, the slip roads are not unusual for this type of location and they have been marked out as such to allow for maximum stacking of traffic at congested times with one of the main aims being to avoid stationary traffic on the mainline. It is still expected that although not specifically marked out as such that traffic will adhere to the spirit of the Highway Code regarding the use of a roundabout in general i.e left hand lane approach for first half of the roundabout, right hand lane for second half.
The above notwithstanding, I can advise our safety engineers have been made aware of the concerns. . In the long term there are proposals to look at improving this junction which is one of the busiest and most strategically important in the north. However this proposal is in its infancy and should it go ahead, it would not be delivered until 2021-2025 at the earliest. You can track the progress of the proposal https://highwaysengland.co.uk/ projects/ m1m62-lofthouse-interchange/ .
We are always happy to receive feedback from our customers and appreciate you taking the time to contact us If you require any further information regarding this issue please email info@highwaysengland.co.uk or phone 0300 123 5000.
