If you are travelling from M1 northbound around roundabout to M62 eastbound, then you can be in left or right hand lane when you enter the roundabout. There is a set of traffic lights just before you approach the M1 northbound slip road where the M62 slip road joins. If waiting in the left hand lane, you often get caught up by those coming from m62 westbound coming around roundabout to enter M1 northbound slip road. They are allowed to enter the M1 northbound slip road from the right lane leading to numerous near misses as those in left hand lane continue around roundabout to m62 eastbound. I use this daily and see a near miss every time. The lane markings need to be revised to avoid the collision risk without causing tailbacks.

Thank you for contacting Highways England on 28 August regarding your observations on traffic travelling from the M1 to the M62 towards Hull. .
If I have understood your comments correctly the situation you have described would seems to be in relation to driver behavior. I do understand your concerns regarding this but it is a difficult issue to resolve. If this is regards to the layout of the roundabout, the slip roads are not unusual for this type of location and they have been marked out as such to allow for maximum stacking of traffic at congested times with one of the main aims being to avoid stationary traffic on the mainline. It is still expected that although not specifically marked out as such that traffic will adhere to the spirit of the Highway Code regarding the use of a roundabout in general i.e left hand lane approach for first half of the roundabout, right hand lane for second half.
The above notwithstanding, I can advise our safety engineers have been made aware of the concerns. . In the long term there are proposals to look at improving this junction which is one of the busiest and most strategically important in the north. However this proposal is in its infancy and should it go ahead, it would not be delivered until 2021-2025 at the earliest. You can track the progress of the proposal https://highwaysengland.co.uk/ projects/ m1m62-lofthouse-interchange/ .
We are always happy to receive feedback from our customers and appreciate you taking the time to contact us If you require any further information regarding this issue please email info@highwaysengland.co.uk or phone 0300 123 5000.
