Dear Sir/Madam
Thank you for your email on the 10 September to our Customer Contact Centre requesting CCTV footage. Your request has been passed to me for reply as Business Manager at the regional operations centre at South Mimms.
I am sorry to hear of the signage you encountered on the M1. The signage from junctions 6 to 8 were activated by the Motorway Incident Detection and Automated Signalling system (MIDAS). These are a series of electro-magnetic loops cut into the road surface, these detect the speed and volume of traffic passing over them. Please find attached our MIDAS information guide for further information this may explain the speed signage you encountered.
On the M1 around junctions 6 to 13 the traffic flows tend to be fairly consistent (i.e. we have predictable morning and evening peaks). This is also the case for Saturday mornings and Bank Holiday weekends. Also on this section during weekday rush hours traffic flows tend to be heavier southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening.
We always recommend, regardless of what time of day your plan on traveling, to check your route for incidents. www.trafficengland.com is a very useful website designed to provide information on traffic flow and incidents so that the general public can be as well informed as possible regarding their proposed routes.
I am sorry for the delay you experienced and hope my email helps explain why the signs were displayed. We are continually reviewing our performance when dealing with incidents and are always looking for improvements in the management of these situations and customer feedback forms an important part of this process.
If you would like to discuss this further please contact me. For anything else please contact our customer contact centre by email at info@highwaysengland.co.uk or telephone 0300 123 5000.
Kind Regards
Lisa Smith Business Manager, Operations Support East Highways England | C/O Woodlands | Manton Lane | Bedford | MK41 7LW Web: www.highwaysengland.co.uk
