Debris on cycle lane, plus use of crossing highly dangerous for users due to close passing of high speeding vehicles. No adequate barriers.
Thank you for contacting National Highways about the footpath along the A47 leading from Postwick Junction to Whitlingham Country Park.
We appreciate you reporting the debris on the path and recognise that the footpath is very narrow at this location. On Monday our inspector went to the site and removed the obstructing debris from the footpath.
The path is not actually a cycle path and has blue signs on it telling any users to dismount their cycles before using it. The path over the bridge is historic and our safety engineers have also mentioned that cycling on this path should not occur as the parapet height on the bridge is insufficient.
We’ve already looked for solutions in a previous safety study. Unfortunately, there is insufficient room to install safety barriers. The study concluded that there is no simple low cost method to improve safety for pedestrians.
The only viable option is to install an overbridge to remove the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles entirely. This solution requires a high investment and would need some input from Norfolk County Council (NCC) as well. As a result, the best we can do at the moment is to continue to raise this in our conversations with NCC.
Thank you again for your query and for reporting the debris on the path.
Kind Regards National Highways
